Singapore's landmarks across the island turned off their lights for the Earth Hour on Saturday evening.

From 8: 30 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. local time, iconic buildings such as the Merlion statue, the Singapore Flyer observation wheel, Changi Airport, shopping malls along the Orchard Road, as well as bank towers at the central business district, switched off their non-essential lights as a symbolic gesture to combat climate change.

At the Esplanade Park, thousands of individuals joined a concert which aims to spread the green concept to more people. With this year's slogan being "Earth Hour, Every Hour", organizers want participants to go beyond the hour and adopt a sustainable lifestyle.

"So what we are encouraging is that people make adjustments to their daily lives to reduce carbon emissions," said Amy Ho, managing director of the WWF Singapore. "So it's not just about these 60 minutes on March 27, but it's really what you do on a regular, a daily basis."

According to local media, more than 500 companies have pledged to take part in this year's Earth Hour, up from last year's total of 450 companies.
