Zhang Shu (1908–1938) was born in Kengkou Township, Shexian County, Anhui Province.
On December 16, 1938, Zhang Shu arrived in Guilin for a continued national salvation singing movement against the Japanese aggression. At 13:05 on December 24, nine Japanese aircraft invaded Guilin, dropping more than 100 bombs, which destroyed and burned down more than 600 houses, with more than 80 casualties. However, Zhang Shu chose not to avoid the airstrike. He kept staying at the residence with his 3-year-old daughter and composing The Song for Wounded Warriors for which he had written lyrics yesterevening. But, unfortunately, Zhang Shu died a martyr with his daughter in the invaders' bombing.
During his short but glorious life, Zhang Shu had composed more than 200 songs, over 80 of which have been preserved till now. In particular, those revolutionary and anti-Japanese songs such as Defend the Motherland, Hongbo Song, Sunset, My Husband Is a Soldier, and A Sturdy Man Goes to the Battlefront were popular with the people; The Song for Wounded Warriors not yet completed is the last song Zhang Shu left in Guilin.
Who doesn't love the country? Who doesn't love the family?
Who isn't hot-blooded? Who is willing to be a slave for others?
We want revenge! We cannot tolerate the invasion!
Does it matter who are the invaders?
None of the Chinese are afraid of the Japanese aggressors!
My comrade-in-arms! Let's heal our wounds and again return to the battlefield
to kill the invaders as many as possible!
Soldiers who fight the enemies till death are deemed as heroes;
only by holding on to the close of the war can we build our great nation!

谁不爱国?谁不爱家?
谁没有热血?谁愿作牛马?
我们要报仇,我们忍不下。
带了花又算什么?
鬼子兵,谁怕他,
弟兄们!伤好了再去打,
杀他一个够本,多杀几个就赚了他;
要干到底才是好汉,
要干到底,才能建立大中华。
