Zhang Bao from Fusui, Guangxi, was originally known as Mo Guoshi or also Mo Zhendan.
In 1920, Mo Guoshi, gaining the highest scores in Guangxi, was admitted by Tsinghua University in Beijing and became a candidate student for studying in the United States. Later, he was expelled from the university due to his organization of a student movement on campus. Afterward, he changed his name to Mo Zhendan, implying revitalizing the Chinese nation.
In 1927, Mo Zhendan went to Chicago and devoted himself to revolutionary movements during which he had a deeper understanding of the essence of Marxism. In 1928, he joined the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) through recommendation. Later, he served as the third secretary of the CPUSA Central Committee Chinese Bureau and the editor-in-chief of Xian Feng Bao (The Chinese Vanguard), forging an indissoluble bond with the newspaper.
In 1932, Mo Zhendan went to Moscow secretly. In 1935, he established Jiu Guo Bao (Save the Country). Because of work needs, he changed his name to Zhang Bao, meaning "a piece of the newspaper".
In 1938, as the Soviet Union intensified the Great Purge, Zhang Bao was arrested and prisoned. In 1940, he was sent to the prison camp for hard labor in the Komi Republic near the Arctic Circle. In 1947, he was set free. In 1949, hapless Zhang Bao was arrested again and exiled to a concentration camp in Siberia and set free until 1955. His 18-year exile ended.
In 1956, Zhang Bao returned to Beijing by international train. After 30-year wandering life overseas, Zhang Bao who was bursting with youthful energy and ambitions before his overseas journey was 53 years old when he returned to the motherland.
After return, he had taken up such positions as the head of the Russian Team under the Home News for Overseas Service Department of Xinhua News Agency and expert of the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau. In addition, he participated in translating the Selected Works of Mao Zedong, the Selected Works of Zhou Enlai, and the Selected Works of Liu Shaoqi into Russian versions and reviewing and finalizing the Russian versions of the documents of important Party and government meetings.
张报:在逆境中坚守
张报,广西扶绥人,原名莫国史,又名莫震旦。
1920年,莫国史以广西总分第一名的成绩考上了北京清华学校,成为当时清华留美预备生。后因在学校发起学生运动,被清华学校开除学籍。之后改名莫震旦,意味着振兴中华。
1927年,莫震旦前往芝加哥,投身革命运动,进一步认识马克思主义真谛,并经介绍于1928年加入美国共产党,任美共中央中国局第三任书记、《先锋报》主编,与报纸结下不解之缘。
1932年,莫震旦秘密前往莫斯科, 1935年创办《救国报》。因工作需要,改名张报,寓意“一张报纸”。
1938年,苏联肃反运动扩大化,张报被逮捕入狱,于1940年被遣送至接近北极圈的科米自治共和国的劳动营服刑,1947年获释。1949年,命运坎坷的张报再次被捕,流放到西伯利亚的叶林赛斯集中营,直至1955年无罪释放。至此,长达18年的流放岁月画上句号。
1956年,张报乘坐国际列车返回北京。在海外漂泊了30年的游子,出去时青春焕发、踌躇满志,归来时已是53岁。
劫后余生的张报回国后,先后担任新华社对外部俄文组组长、中央编译局专家,参加过《毛泽东选集》《周恩来选集》《刘少奇选集》的俄文翻译以及全党、全国重要会议文件的俄译文审稿、定稿工作。
