New national standard traffic lights have triggered heated discussions among netizens after the designer Sun Zhengliang unveiled them via livestream on Sunday.
The new traffic lights separate the left, straight, and right lanes with round lights in the middle for straight and arrows on both sides for left and right turns.
The countdown between different signal lights has been canceled and the traffic light rules when crossing intersections have been changed.
Netizens argued that the new version makes traffic rules more complicated, and more traffic lights make them feel confused.
But some experts said the new traffic lights enable vehicles in different directions to be independently controlled.
The new version traffic lights have been piloted in some cities like Shanghai and Nanjing, and could possibly be promoted nationwide in future.
