On February 22, the town of Jingde, located in Liuzhou, Guangxi, celebrated the vibrant Hakka Shangdeng Festival. The festival showcased an array of lively activities, such as vying for old lanterns, welcoming new lanterns, and hanging lanterns. The villagers came together, creating a bustling atmosphere.

In the Hakka dialect, the words "丁" (ding) for "having a baby born into the family" and "灯" (deng) for "lantern" are homophones, lending a fortunate significance to the tradition of hanging lanterns as symbols of family growth and the hope for the prosperity of upcoming generations. Couples eager to start a family or newlyweds who wish to have children would vie for old lanterns, believing that winning a lantern represents their luck to have a baby in the forthcoming year.
