Electronic vehicle licenses will be piloted in 60 cities nationwide, including Beijing and Tianjin, starting on July 1, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Thursday.
Wang, director of the ministry's Traffic Management Bureau, said that, to ensure effective application, the electronic vehicle licenses issued in the 60 pilot cities will be valid nationwide.
He noted that drivers still need to carry their paper vehicle license in the vehicle, and the e-document can be used for vehicle registration, handling traffic violations and traffic accident processing at traffic management service windows.
Vehicle owners in the pilot cities can apply for electronic vehicle licenses through the "Jiaoguan 12123" app, the only mobile application software for the official Internet traffic safety comprehensive service management platform of the Ministry of Public Security.
The e-license has a unified national format and also supports the owner of a motor vehicle authorizing others to use the electronic driving license, mainly to facilitate entrusting others to handle business on their behalf, he said.
The public security traffic management department will actively expand the application in scenarios such as handling passenger and freight transport permits as well as insurance claims, in collaboration with relevant departments, he said.
"We will further improve the information system, establish supporting systems, expand application scenarios and fully promote vehicle licenses nationwide by the end of 2024," he said.
According to the ministry, as of now, the national public security traffic management departments have issued electronic inspection marks 1.48 billion times and issued electronic driving licenses to 250 million drivers.
