Yulin Papercutting, a tradition dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, flourished during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period. In Yulin, papercutting is a widespread folk art where artists use scissors or carving knives to create intricate and meaningful designs on paper, adding color to everyday life.

Yulin"s papercuts are diverse in form and rich in content, featuring simple compositions and elegant lines. The motifs include figures, flowers, lions, tigers, birds, fish, insects, etc. Designs vary based on the occasion: for birthdays and longevity celebrations, the character "寿" (longevity) or peaches are cut; for New Year, fish and the character "福" (happiness); for the lantern hanging festival, dolls, gourds, and lotuses; and for weddings, the double happiness symbol is popular, with common themes like "Blessed with a Son," "Qilin Bringing Children," and "Dragon and Phoenix Play with Double Happiness." These designs symbolize festive joy and good wishes, reflecting the rich local flavor of Yulin.
