Great sacks of rice being taken from the production site and loaded onto vehicles for transportation in Xinhua village of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, provide a fond memory for Chen Dong, a member of the poverty alleviation working team based in the village.

Located in Gangnan district of Guigang city, the village was home to large tracts of wasteland, blocked waterways and poor roads, Chen said.

To make full use of the local land resources, the poverty alleviation working team in Xinhua village transferred more than 10 hectares of uncultivated farmland to the local agricultural cooperative.

In doing so, the village collective invested to level the farmland, restore facilities, including roads and canals, and invite professionals to manage the rice planting and mechanized farming, which has helped the village achieve a profitable harvest.

The income will be distributed to poor households in the village, aiming to realize the "double income increase" of both the village collective and the farmers, according to the local government.

Gangnan district has stepped up its efforts to promote the village collective's economic development, benefiting 50 poor villages so far this year.
