Nanning Wuxu International Airport in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region conducted a total of 88,000 flights with a passenger throughput of 10.58 million people in 2020, despite the impact caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, according to statistics released by the airport on Jan 4.

The airport has made continuous efforts to resume operations, taking initiatives such as ensuring the smooth running of several airlines transporting anti-pandemic medical supplies, which were heading to both domestic and overseas destinations such as Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and Bangkok, capital of Thailand.

By the end of March 2020, it had resumed more than 200 flights to major domestic cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen in Guangdong province and Chengdu in Sichuan province.

Positive growth in both flight numbers and domestic passenger throughput were achieved in October 2020 for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airport launched flights to new destinations including Lhasa in Tibet, Xishuangbanna in Yunnan province and Weifang in Shandong province last year. The launch of the flight to Tibet marks the airport's full coverage of all capital cities in China.

Nanning airport had opened a total of 205 flight routes by the end of 2020, with 180 of them being domestic routes. The number of domestic destinations amounts to 124 and 101 of them are domestic cities.

The passenger throughput of Nanning airport - the first of its kind in Guangxi - exceeded 10 million in December 2015 for the first time in its 65 year history.
