Wang Yu, 28, became famous overnight for imitating noble Chinese imperial consort Yang Guifei (Yang Yuhuan) of Tang Dynasty (618-907) in a block themed on Tang culture in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
Wang runs a teahouse with her friends in the block, where people can "meet" Tang notables like Li Bai and Wang Wei, two talented poets of the dynasty.
Encouraged by her friends, the girl who weighs more than 100 kilograms tried on Tang Dynasty clothing. According to history, plump women enjoyed their heyday in the Tang era, Yang Guifei having been one.
Wang mockingly calls herself Yang Noble Fat, one Chinese character different from Yang Guifei, out of respect for her noble role model. "Yang Guifei might not be as fat as I am," said Wang, hoping people won't judge her historical accuracy.
It's not easy to mimic Yang Guifei's makeup. She gradually grasped the essentials of the makeup after repeated learning. It often takes three to four hours from applying foundation to doing up her hairstyle. She said that exquisite makeup not only makes her feel happy, but also showed her respect for others.
Wang said she will try to lose weight in the future and attract more young people to learn about traditional Chinese culture.
