Nam Ou River Cascade Hydropower Station invested by China in Laos has generated over 10 billion kWh of electricity as of Tuesday, said Power China on Wednesday.

Located in the provinces of Phongsaly and Luang Prabang in Northern Laos, the Nam Ou River Cascade Hydropower project comprises seven dams with a total installed capacity of 1.272 million kWh. It was put into operation at the end of September 2021.

The power project is a major success for Power China in participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, said Li Zhigong, Chinese consul general in Luang Prabang, during the public open day of the power station Wednesday.

Chinese-funded Power Generation Enterprises Association in Laos was unveiled here on the same day. The association consists of 13 Chinese enterprises that have funded 18 hydropower stations with a total installed capacity of 2,256 megawatts in operation, or 49.7 percent of the total Lao grid.

Power stations invested by Power China in Laos meet over 12 percent of the country’s total electricity needs, and the number can reach 30 percent in drought season, according to the person in charge of the Nam Ou River Cascade Hydropower Project from Power China.
