Wearing traditional ethnic costumes, people of the Miao ethnic group celebrated the traditional New Year in Gandong Township of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, south China"s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Wednesday.
Local Miao people celebrated their traditional New Year in various ways. In the evening, each household prepared abundant provisions before Miao New Year, including glutinous rice, pork, fish, and alcohol.
Local villagers then waited for a parade team. Composed of young people and children, the team went from house to house with bamboo whips, beating fences and poultry houses. It is said that the ritual can drive away evil spirits and pray for a good harvest in the coming year.
