Yulin Chapao (a kind of dessert made of wax gourd and used for brewing tea)

Yulin Chapao dates back to the Song Dynasty. During that time, girls from affluent families would research ingredients that could be paired with tea in their leisure time. Wax gourd, known for its sweet taste and cooling effect, was chosen as a primary ingredient, forming the basis of what would evolve into Chapao.

In Yulin, it"s customary for a bride to have three essential treasures—her dowry, the skill of making Chapao, and the Chapao. The number, style, and variety of Chapao a family possesses symbolize their status and position.

The production of a Chapao requires seven key steps: engraving, soaking, greening, and setting, among others, each step demanding specific expertise. Chapao is now popular at celebrations such as elders" birthdays and for entertaining important guests.
