The 2024 Nature's 10, an annual list of 10 people “who helped shape science” , was released on Monday. It features two Chinese scientists: Li Chunlai, deputy chief designer for China’s Chang’e-6 mission, and Xu Huji, a physician at the Naval Medical University.
Li is the first scientist to personally receive the lunar soil samples brought back to Earth by the Chang'e-6 mission, which will help uncover many of the Moon's secrets.
Xu successfully used gene-edited T cells from donors to treat severe autoimmune diseases. The success of T cell-based cancer therapies offers promising prospects for large-scale production of advanced CAR-T treatments.
The individuals selected for the 2024 Nature's 10 list include Placide Mbala, an epidemiologist in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), who sounded the alarm about monkeypox virus’s outbreak, and Canadian-American astronomer Wendy Freedman, who helped calculate the Universe’s expansion rate.
